...pressure on executives has increased to a point where many are not able to solely focus on one project due to all the other balls they must keep in the air. While it gave executives at other businesses pleasure to witness the discomfort of BA's board during the fiasco (with the exception of those who chose to fly with BA on the fateful days), many will have felt pangs of anxiety about delivering their own projects, and we can all learn lessons from T5. Often the failure to deliver on targets is not down to the poor decisions or performance of individual directors, but due to small problems which go unnoticed or a lack of specialist knowledge in key areas which impact on the whole project. Furthermore, as business has become leaner, the pressure on its executives has increased to a point where many are not able to solely focus on one project due to all the other balls they must keep in the air. Companies who better understand this can plan and foresee these issues arising. They can realise and appreciate the need and value that bringing in specialist assistance can offer. In BA's case it is clear that they needed assistance to target the unique challenges that opening Terminal 5 would produce, the result could have been very different; problems with the baggage handling systems would and should have been identified and fixed, and staff on the ground fully prepared for the launch.
Through our experience of working directly with senior executives across industry, we have developed solutions to key challenges which directors face in delivering projects on time and on budget. The result is successful delivery of projects time and time again, for which the board takes full credit.
